Svitzer Global invests in Kongsberg’s innovative maritime technologies to train Australia’s emerging tug-masters.

Our Role — To create a space that enables education, simulation, and servicing of these technologies.

Svitzer is a global company that innovates and coordinates maritime services, making it one of the world’s leading tugboat operators. Their success worldwide is a testament to their ongoing investment in education, innovation, and technology — an energy we’ve tapped into as the architects for their Tug Boat Simulator Project.

We enjoyed studying the tugs themselves, and this enthusiasm is reflected in the design. The curved roof is reminiscent of a hull, while the red, black, and white palette draws directly from the vessels. Each post and beam at the entry is named after a different tug operating in the port, welcoming visitors into Svitzer’s Newcastle HQ and connecting them to the fleet. Inside the simulator, visitors experience what it means to be a tug-master.

This project shows how careful study and understanding of the users and the typology can shape how a building works, looks, and feels.
