On a tight urban lot - sits a family home that punches well above it's weight in space.

When this project began, Ellis was still just a future consideration. As the design evolved, it became clear this would be the home where he grows up — a place to play, learn, run through the garden and chase the cat.

His parents wanted a balance: a home that feels welcoming for guests, yet private and calm for family life. Spaces to gather, to read, and to stay connected to the outdoors.

The existing 1950s home anchors the front of the site, with a new addition extending beyond to house the main family zones and open to the landscape. A central entry courtyard is carved into the plan, simplifying arrival while drawing morning light deep into the kitchen, shifting to a softer afternoon glow.

We took cues from the original home, adopting a similar roof language across both the extension and the glazing, unifying old and new while managing solar gain and protecting the façade.

Ultimately, this is a home designed for longevity — one that will grow with Ellis and his family over time. A rewarding collaboration between clients, consultants and builders, resulting in a home shaped as much by life as it is by design.
