Sometimes the best part of an amazing site can actually become one of the biggest challenges.

This project expands the distillery’s production capabilities while creating a place to experience the spirit of Maria River firsthand. Inspired by the simple, functional forms of the existing riverside boat shed, the design draws on the wide gable roof and honest materiality to sit gently in the landscape, allowing the environment to remain the hero.

A key challenge of the site was designing for flood resilience. Located in an area that has experienced some of NSW’s most significant flooding events, the entire structure is raised over 2.5 metres above ground. Rather than see this as a constraint, we embraced the opportunity to craft a generous, accessible ramp that winds through the site. This becomes not only a practical route to amenities and flood refuge, but also a spatial journey used for distillery tours, tastings, and occasional exhibitions.

But the real story here is the product. The Maria River range speaks for itself—carefully crafted and deeply rooted in its place. It’s been a joy to work alongside the team, learning about the distilling process and sampling a few special batches along the way.

We’re looking forward to the opening of Maria River Distillery and seeing people experience this remarkable site, spirit, and setting for themselves.
