Boys Bunker

3 kids under the age of 5
“Whatever we build, it needs to be bomb-proof.” (Client Brief)
This project, like all our projects, is about good solar gain, thermal control, and passive heating and cooling. With three young, active boys, this family needed an extension that would facilitate their busy lifestyle and keep up with their energetic kids.
The proposed extension is a double-brick, polished concrete structure that looks out to and opens onto the northern yard. These hard materials are softened by curved forms that guide users through the different spaces — or, in this case, remove sharp edges when the boys decide to ride their trikes through the living room.
A simple addition that works for this family, the palette is light and bright, mixed with hardwood — the colour comes from the toys and the people. Subtle elements divide the kitchen from the living space, forming both structural members and a gentle separation of the two uses.
After a few landings, you’re back in the old part of the home, which contains the sleeping spaces. We look forward to Stage 2 of this project — which will help retain the existing heritage of the old home for many years to come.
