1908 cottage in the heart of Waratah, NSW

This project set out to make a clear and honest distinction between the old and the new. The original structure now houses the quieter, private sleeping zones, while a contemporary light-filled extension creates a generous family space that opens seamlessly to the garden.

The new addition reaches confidently to the north, taking full advantage of natural light. However, due to building envelope constraints, traditional shading elements like awnings or eaves weren’t permitted—despite the need for solar control. In response, we designed an inverted truss where the peak becomes a defining angle that cuts back into the glazing. This form bounces sunlight up and across the ceiling, diffusing it gently through the space.

To the west, a deep covered deck extends the living area outdoors, accessible through large operable panels that blur the boundary between inside and out. It’s become a versatile, comfortable space—one where Lola and Maxy now spend their days learning, playing and growing.
