Mick & Sue House

Ageing in place with views from the top.
A new home that makes the most of an existing shed and pool while celebrating panoramic views over Lake Macquarie. The design arranges two distinct pods — one for Mick and Sue, and another for visiting grandkids and guests — giving everyone their own sense of retreat.
The main dwelling is designed entirely on one level, with a master bedroom, ensuite and powder room flowing out to an elevated viewing deck, kitchen, dining and living area. This level entry and gentle connection to outdoor spaces means our clients have a heightened level of confort in their space, staying connected to the garden and views with ease of accessibility.
Collaborating with Habitat Lab, an extensive site study and careful level mapping guided the placement of the split dwellings and double car garage. Slightly elevated from neighbouring properties, the challenge was to maximise the lake views while protecting privacy and energy efficiency. The solution: positioning the garage at the front of the site and transforming its roof into a lush rooftop garden and viewing deck. This move screens the living spaces from the street while creating a tranquil platform to take in the water views.
Thermal comfort has been a priority throughout. Deep eaves, the use of polycarbonate roofing over the central connecting deck, and thoughtful orientation help manage heat and light year-round — capturing warmth in winter and providing shade in summer. The central corridor deck not only links the pods but acts as a passive solar collector and an additional semi-outdoor gathering space.
Material choices balance cost, durability and delight. Raw, low-maintenance finishes are complemented by warm terracotta roof tiles — a playful nod to the tiled roofs common in the area. Simple lintel blocks are paired with integrated lighting to add texture and joy to everyday details, proving that modest materials can still elevate the spirit of a home.
